Primary discovered 21 August 2001 from Cerro Tololo Observatory, La Serena, Chile.
Companion discovered 4 October 2002 using the Hubble Space Telescope by K. Noll, D. Stephens, W. Grundy, D. Cruikshank, S. Tegler, and W. Romanishin; announced 17 December 2002.
